UPDATED: EVE Online - Retribution 1.32
Written as if explained to someone with no knowledge in any of this.
I've received a fair bit of Eve-mails containing questions about client manipulation and I wish to address them all, however, for the purposes of this thread I will focus on the following question.
Quote:Are there any other client modifications or manipulations that I can do, legally, that might either boost performance or be visually appealing? More specifically my overview.
There are a variety of tweaks you can do to your overview and your client in general to improve overall usability and function. Fully customizing your interface to suit your needs. Whether it is color coding your over tabs to help memorize what each ones function and placement is or completely customize damage notifications, pilot information, selected items info, etc,.
I am going to focus on some of the more simpler additions.
OVERVIEW SETTINGS
Overview - Screenshot 1 Overview - Screenshot 2
In the future I will include more overview settings that contain overview profiles. The following overview settings will NOT contain ANY profiles. The following excerpts of code will allow you to change your overview so that it mirrors the ones I have given screen shots of. It will allow you to keep ALL of your pre-existing overview profiles. Only tweaking the appearance of them.
How It's Done:
Color coding your overview to show pilot info, as appears when moused over, in different colors and sizes. Also allows for newline commands thus giving you this appearance: Overview - Screenshot 4 There are some E-Uni members who like to fly using this style.
We need to locate your overviews .xml file containing the code and settings we wish to edit.
Step 1: locate the Overview folder in your SUB-EVE directory. It will be located in Documents if using windows. If you do not have this folder make it. Be sure to make the 'O' capital. "Overview" Will not export/import otherwise.
Windows: C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\EVE\Overview
Mac: YourUserName/Library/Application Support/EVE Online/p_drive/My Documents/EVE/Overview
Linux: (Me thinks o.0) home/eve/Overview
Step 2: Once in the Overview directory locate the Overview file you use in game (or wish to add this onto) and open it via a text editor. Notepad, Notepad++, etc,.
NOTE: If you created the folder there will not be a .xml file in it. Meaning you have never imported any overview settings. If this is the case log in to eve create a basic overview and import it with a name of your choosing. Then go back out of game and follow step 2.
Step 3: Now, inside this .xml file you will see an opening and closing bracket named shipLabels. (There are greater than and less than symbols before and after each) This is what you are going to copy over. Copy the code from the following link and paste it in. Save the file. Remember to save it as a .xml if it does not do this by default.
Primary Overview Code - ShipLabels
Step 4: Open your EVE client and log in. Once in game go to your overview and select import overview settings. Choose the file you have just edited. Exit EVE. Your Overview will now display as screenshots 1 and 2 appear.
NOTE: The .xml file has no relation to overview tabs. They are contained in the characters master settings file. In order to change them you will have to enter the code manually in game. (If you already have them saved on one character they can be mirrored using the methods I describe in How To Make Settings Between Characters/Alts Global)
Setting Color Values To View Tabs
This is what it will look like. I added symbols just as a reference that they can in fact be added. Using them to designate tabs is not a bad practice. They can be deleted if you want.
Screenshot - Overview Tabs
Step 1: Open up your Overview settings --> Select Overview Tabs. There are 3 sets of fields. Tab Name, Overview Profile, Bracket Profile. We are interested in Tab Name. You will enter the following code into each Tab Name field. Obviously edit out 'TEST 1' for the name your are using for each tab.
Primary Overview Tab Code
Step 2: click apply and you are done. Edit as needed.
Play around with the colors as needed also. A pointer. ALL color codes require an APLHA. Standard Hex will not work!
I will update tomorrow how to change colors, fonts, and sizes. Again, it's getting late and should log soon. Hope this helps. If I forgot anything please let me know. Thanks =)

It's in ~/EVE/Overview by default (Linux uses case-sensitive filesystem, so eve and EVE are different directories), but can be changed by moving 'My Documents' folder to other place in winecfg settings.

Thanks for this. It's great how the simple things give a better perspective.
For sure. I'm glad it could help.
How to fix that issue: If you open up the XML you will see said star and arrow. It may have changed to '?' as export/import may not have recognized the format. If you open the XML file you will see either the stars/arrow or a ? where it should be. Simple open up your Character Map Application within windows. Type 'map' in startup and you will see it. If not do a search. It contains all the niffty little symbols to use. I will explain better with a full overview when I have my PC back in a day or thanks.

Try [your user name]/Library/Application Support/EVE Online/p_drive/My Documents/EVE/Overview
If the overview file does not exist you'll need to create it. 'Overview'.

Thanks for the extra insight! there is no single best way to manipulate your EVE client. I enjoy being able to try them all and find even more ways to expand my EVE experience.
On the subject, I've just finished a new paper/method to add to my Client Manipulation Series. I will be adding it this week. To shed a bit of light on it before I release it:
This new method is a bit more complex than my previous ones and should only be done if you are familiar with programming on at least an intermediate level. I am in the process of perfecting the method, after which I will talk with a friend to help me design a program that will do it for you with out touching a piece of code. Thus allowing this to be used by all eve players alike. Including the novice.
This new method will allow you to change practically anything and everything about your EVE experience should you choose to do so. Keep in mind. Per the EULA you are able and allowed to change anything you can or wish to so long as this change does not give you an advantage over another player. All expansions made to the client in my new method are a mix of visual enhancements, mechanical enhancements (Controls, Keys, Client windows. For instance you an run multiple EVE clients in different patterns and instances on your desktop/screen. IE: 4 corners. Allows you to run 4 clients at the same time all on the same screen like the following 1-4 poorly made diagram =)
1 2 3 4
Full color customization of everything you see in game. All text fields, all incoming and outgoing text. etc, etc,.
I will cover this more when i release it. First I must run this past CCP to make sure it is in fact legal. There is some python involved, however, there is now communications with the server so I am pretty sure it's legit. I will get back to everyone on this specific matter as soon as CCP gets back to me. Thanks everyone, as always, for the continued support! fly safe o7

Douglas Whyte wrote:That would be awesome. I've been trying to figure out how about I would change the font of the menu text. As you can tell I went with a bright yellow :P. I can still see for the most part what Is written ontop, however tbh it's mostly out of memory of what I know is written. I would like to make it so that menu text is instead black. Further adding to the contrast I want. However leaving field text white.
By the sounds of it, you have an idea of how abouts to do this. care to share?
Yup. I just got my clinet issues resolved so now I can log into EVE. I have to update all my threads for Odyssey now. Some of the mechanics have changed for Overviews, client settings, etc,. Once I have these 4 threads updated I will releases the 5th on the above. I will send you an E-mail as soon as they are up as well.

If your looking for dingbats you can also try your local "Windows Character Map" or just "Character Map" for Linux and Apple Machines.
1.) In Windows you can go to start and search "Character Map"
2.) Select Advanced Mode or Advanced View depending on the version of windows/linux
3.) Select the Font.
4.) Select Unicoe Subrange in the Group By Catogory.
5.) Select Symbols & Dingbats.
You can not import UTS Characters toi In-game. You can however Export them. Meaning if you edit the code locally you will not be able to save the settings globally for others to use. They will need to manually place their own symbols in the code for it to work. Fight, Fly, Crow... Bangerang |
